When Is Extraction Necessary?

Simple vs. Surgical Extractions
A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible above the gumline and can be loosened and removed in one piece using dental instruments. A surgical extraction is needed for teeth that are impacted, broken at the gumline, or have roots that make simple removal impossible. Dr. Merchi will determine which type of extraction is appropriate based on the condition and position of your tooth.
After Your Extraction
After an extraction, a blood clot forms in the socket to protect the bone and nerves during healing. It is important to protect this clot by avoiding smoking, using straws, or spitting forcefully for at least 72 hours. Eat soft foods, apply ice packs to reduce swelling, and take any prescribed medications as directed. Most patients feel significantly better within two to three days.
